MOST OUT OF PLACE PERSON Kicking off our brand new online feature is no other person than Director of Friends Creative Theater, Sherwin St Hillarie. Sherwin chose to wear an OWTU T-Shirt at this Year's Emancipation Day Celebration in Point Fortin on Emancipation Night. Sherwin was a member of the inaugural emancipation celebration workshop pioneered by John Cupid back in 1984. On a night when most people wore dashikis or other African "garb" in order to identify with the occasion, Sherwin was totally out of sync. It is true that emancipation evolved from struggle and the OWTU struggles for the working class --- but as for Sherwin on this night ----- HE HAD THE STRUGGLE WRONG. --- Add your comment |

![]() The members of Starworld Strikers after their game
|
In a fatal vehicular accident on February 10th 2002, Lester Salick was taken away from those close to him . Today, his memory lives on in a way which we are sure he would be pleased.
Present was former
national youth striker Nkosi Blackman, who was also in
the car when Lester died. The accident brought a
screeching end to Nkosi's very promising football
future. Most people are convinced that Nkosi would
have been in the starting lineup for the "Soca Warriors"
in Germany earlier this year. In the football fiesta, Starworld Strikers emerged victorious. Before his passing, Lester was part of the Strikers squad. The members of 'Point Public' wishes to publicly thank the following for their contributions towards the event: Kern "sauce" Williams, Bevon "tattoo" Bailey, Sylvester "babe" Gervais, Ancil "Chappy" Samuel and Anton Alexander. NEW MAYOR ELECTED Point Fortin now has a new Mayor. Former General Manager of Trinmar Operations and now Vice President of state owned, Petroleum Company of Trinidad & Tobago (Petrotrin), Victor Mitchell, has been nominated as Borough Council Alderman and then subsequently Mayor. In a simple inauguration function held at the auditorium of the Point Fortin Borough Council’s “Town Hall” on July 27th 2006, Mitchell formally gave his acceptance to the chair. He replaced former Mayor His Worship St Clair Natta. The new Mayor has a distinguished career in the petro-chemical sector, having served at various managerial levels in the state-owned oil company; he is no stranger to Point Fortin, having acquired residence in Clifton Hill for over ten years. In his brief, soft spoken inaugural address, His Worship thanked his predecessor who he described as a true statesman who was also his mentor upon his (Mitchell) entry into the Petroleum Industry. He stated that his vision for the borough is to become the hub for commercial activity in the southwestern peninsular. He also noted the cultural and sporting achievements of the borough, mentioning the likes of Voot “O’Garro, Leroy De Leon, John Cupid, Super Blue and others. C.E.O of the Corporation Ms. Patricia Bradshaw, whilst welcoming the new Mayor, also thanked the outgoing Mayor for his service and acknowledged that they had a good working relationship. She highlighted the fact that the council has no opposing councilors and took the opportunity to inform the new Mayor, that the employees (Public Servants) of the corporation and not his opposition. The ceremony was generally amiable except for an apparent irate employee who unsuccessfully tried to disrupt proceedings by making comments about corruption. He was subsequently escorted away. The following were in attendance amongst others: PNM Party Chairman John Donaldson, past Mayors and Council Members, representatives from local social groups, reigning Miss Point Fortin and members from the business fraternity. This website takes the opportunity to congratulate His Worship The Mayor, The Honorable Victor Mitchell, on his new appointment. D. James

We were like two peas in a pod you
and I But God chose you to be at his side,You were a
gift to us for forty three years; Let's remember the
good memories, the laughter and even the tears.
You'll always be with us in our
hearts and in our minds:
And in the two beautiful
children Daniel and Jasmine that you left behind.
You were like a shooting star that
graced us with your presence: and like a beautiful
flower we will mourn your absence.
no one will ever know the sorrow your
mother knows
Nor will she have the gift of more
tomorrows.
For the love, the laughter and the
friendship you brought to the world,

will never grow old, for now and forever you'll
always be a young beautiful soul.

HIS EXCELLENCY DWIGHT
Never
in one million years would I have believed that I would
hear the words “His Excellency, Dwight Yorke”. Just over one year ago, Dwight has made a full
pendulum swing from being the most “bad mouthed” sports
personality in Trinidad & Tobago, to being the most
celebrated at this time. Often criticized for not
putting his heart into his game whenever playing for his
country, Yorke’s work rate during the final rounds of
qualifying games and in Germany earned him maximum
respect from all and there was no question as to his
purpose this time around.
It all happened at the Hasley Crawford National Stadium in Port of Spain
on Saturday June 24th 2006, as
part of the tribute in honor of the Soca Warriors
football team on heir return from Germany 2006. At the
ceremony it was announced that each of the 24 players in
the team will receive $1,000,000; $750,000 in units from
the Unit Trust Corporation and $250,000 in cash. Captain Dwight
York will receive an additional, $1,250,000 for his
leadership. Coach Leo Beenhacker will receive $1,000,000 and just like all the team players, is awarded the nation’s second highest award, the Chaconia Medal Gold. Austin Jack Warner came in for high praise from the Prime Minister. Mr. Manning acknowledged Mr. Warner’s contribution towards the warriors’ qualification, however there was no award nor monetary gain towards his name.
Prior to the formal
ceremony, this began at 4: pm, the team members were
paraded through the streets of Woodbrook, Port of Spain in a
carnival like atmosphere where supporters chipped,
danced, pranced and jumped to music whilst chanting the
infectious "ole" all the way to the Stadium where a massive
cultural extravaganza was already in progress.
Anyone ignorant to what was happening would have surely
thought that a carnival mas band was preparing to cross
the savannah stage. Once in the stadium, the crowd
screamed and roared at any mention of the
"warriors" names. Most
popular were; Carlos Edwards, Brent Sancho, Christopher
Birchell (who was not present) Shaka Hislop,
Dwight Yorke and Russel Latapy who was by a great
distance, the most popular of all. Any mention of
his name almost "brought the house down".

OUR WARRIORS MADE US PROUD WIN LOSE OR DRAW
While I believe that our players were less courageous
than our previous two games, our boys did not put us to
shame. We looked matched for the game and since
this is our first time at this level its a victory in
itself.. But where we won, was with our
presence as a people -- Calls I received each day from
Germany noted the acceptance of our culture in a far off
land. Nevertheless the experience was great. Click here to write an opinion or send a comment / congratulations. |

Point Fortin Has Lost A True Son We deliberately did not publish this yesterday (Saturday June 10th) when it occurred since all the celebration was taking place and we did not wan to become a "kill-joy" ----- However, Ronald "Sluggo" John has passed on to meet the creator. We understand, that sometime soon after heartily enjoying the TnT, Sweden game, he was suddenly called. "Sluggo" was committed to our community. --- Before there was "pointalive" Sluggo along with others, actually kept Point Fortin Alive. He was one of those responsible for generating the pride which exists within residents of Point Fortin. He was true to his community. We hereby extend condolences to his wife Wendy, the rest of the family and to his close buddy Hector. Sluggo will be terribly missed.
It is a sweet but bitter day in
Point Fortin.
We will like you to extend your
personal condolences Or click here if you just wish to view condolences already posted. |

COLOURFUL
CARNIVAL
Carnival in
Point Fortin climaxed on Tuesday Night with
the appearance of the band Royalty which was
produced by local mas man Neil Stanley.
At about 7:00pm, Royalty, the last band on
stage at the Victor Chin Kit Park, impressed
the long waiting crowd which had gathered
from early as 3:00pm. |

BEST YEAR FOR POINT PAN 2006 has been the best year for Steelbands in Point Fortin within recent times. Trinmar's "Self Help Marines" captured the South Central Single-Pan title whilst both conventional bands from the area, Tornadoes & Starland, qualified for the national semi finals.
Pan enthusiasts are hoping that this will
serve as a catalyst for reviving the pride
which existed back in the days when
community bands like Dunlop Tornadoes,
Silver Harps, Starland and Sun Valley were
forces to be reckoned with. This year the tunes played by the bands are as follows
In Sunday's (Feb
12th) Semi Finals. Starland will play
2nd in the small band category whilst
Tornadoes will play 4th in with the
medium bands. |

The
situation in Point Fortin and environs took
a turn for the worse today when a Police
Riot Squad was brought in to dismantle
ongoing protest action in communities around
Point Fortin. One resident told Pointalive.com that until the PNM loses its stronghold in the area, the same treatment will continue. The resident stated that at every election season, promise is made about an alternative roadway (Highway) linking Point Fortin and San Fernando, but this project never gets started. It was also stated that no time frame was ever given to begin the project. Click here to share your views |
