Sherwin St Hillarie

MOST OUT OF PLACE PERSON
Kicking off our brand new online feature is no other person than Director of Friends Creative Theater, Sherwin St Hillarie.  Sherwin chose to wear an OWTU T-Shirt at this Year's Emancipation Day Celebration in Point Fortin on Emancipation Night.  Sherwin was a member of the inaugural emancipation celebration workshop pioneered by John Cupid back in 1984.  On a night when most people wore dashikis or other African "garb" in order to identify with the occasion, Sherwin was totally out of sync.
It is true that emancipation evolved from struggle and the OWTU struggles for the working class --- but as for Sherwin on this night -----
HE HAD THE STRUGGLE WRONG.   ---  Add your comment

LESTER SALICK REMEMBERED

In a fatal vehicular accident on February 10th 2002, Lester Salick was taken away from those close to him .   Today, his memory lives on in a way which we are sure he would be pleased.

His friends which forms the group 'Point Public', on Sunday July 30th, organized a day of activities in memory of their dear friend.  The day ended with a football fiesta at the Mahaica Oval, the day was well spent with family and friends turning out to give their support.

Present was former national youth striker Nkosi Blackman, who was also in the car when Lester died.  The accident brought a screeching end to Nkosi's very promising football future.  Most people are convinced that Nkosi would have been in the starting lineup for the "Soca Warriors" in Germany earlier this year.

In the football fiesta, Starworld Strikers emerged victorious. Before his passing, Lester was part of the Strikers squad.

The members of 'Point Public' wishes to publicly thank the following for their contributions towards the event: Kern "sauce" Williams, Bevon "tattoo" Bailey, Sylvester "babe" Gervais, Ancil "Chappy" Samuel and Anton Alexander.

NEW MAYOR ELECTED
Oil man succeeds another oil man.
July 27th '06

Point Fortin now has a new Mayor. Former General Manager of Trinmar Operations and now Vice President of state owned, Petroleum Company of Trinidad & Tobago (Petrotrin), Victor Mitchell, has been nominated as Borough Council Alderman and then subsequently Mayor.  In a simple inauguration function held at the auditorium of the Point Fortin Borough Council’s “Town Hall” on July 27th 2006, Mitchell formally gave his acceptance to the chair. He replaced former Mayor His Worship St Clair Natta.

The new Mayor has a distinguished career in the petro-chemical sector, having served at various managerial levels in the state-owned oil company; he is no stranger to Point Fortin, having acquired residence in Clifton Hill for over ten years.

In his brief, soft spoken inaugural address, His Worship thanked his predecessor who he described as a true statesman who was also his mentor upon his (Mitchell) entry into the Petroleum Industry.

He stated that his vision for the borough is to become the hub for commercial activity in the southwestern peninsular. He also noted the cultural and sporting achievements of the borough, mentioning the likes of Voot “O’Garro, Leroy De Leon, John Cupid, Super Blue and others.

C.E.O of the Corporation Ms. Patricia Bradshaw, whilst welcoming the new Mayor, also thanked the outgoing Mayor for his service and acknowledged that they had a good working relationship.  She highlighted the fact that the council has no opposing councilors and took the opportunity to inform the new Mayor, that the employees (Public Servants) of the corporation and not his opposition.

The ceremony was generally amiable except for an apparent irate employee who unsuccessfully tried to disrupt proceedings by making comments about corruption.  He was subsequently escorted away.

The following were in attendance amongst others: PNM Party Chairman John Donaldson, past Mayors and Council Members, representatives from local social groups, reigning Miss Point Fortin and members from the business fraternity.

This website takes the opportunity to congratulate His Worship The Mayor, The Honorable Victor Mitchell, on his new appointment.

We were like two peas in a pod you and I But God chose you to be at his side,You were a gift to us for forty three years; Let's remember the good memories, the laughter and even the tears.
You'll always be with us in our hearts and in our minds:
And in the two beautiful children Daniel and Jasmine that you left behind.

T&T Football Captain Dwight Yorke

HIS EXCELLENCY DWIGHT
Dwight  Yorke in now T&T sporting ambassador
Saturday June 24th 2006

Never in one million years would I have believed that I would hear the words “His Excellency, Dwight Yorke”. Just over one year ago, Dwight has made a full pendulum swing from being the most “bad mouthed” sports personality in Trinidad & Tobago, to being the most celebrated at this time. Often criticized for not putting his heart into his game whenever playing for his country, Yorke’s work rate during the final rounds of qualifying games and in Germany earned him maximum respect from all and there was no question as to his purpose this time around.

Some associated the new found commitment to maturity late in coming or the inability to maintain the name; "All night Dwight" (LMAO).  Whatever the reason, it was enough to convince Prime Minister Patrick Manning and his cabinet to confer upon him, Sports Ambassadorship and other glowing tributes. Dwight will now be referred to as “His Excellency Dwight Yorke”.

It all happened at the Hasley Crawford National Stadium in Port of Spain on Saturday June 24th 2006, as part of the tribute in honor of the Soca Warriors football team on heir return from Germany 2006.  At the ceremony it was announced that each of the 24 players in the team will receive $1,000,000; $750,000 in units from the Unit Trust Corporation and $250,000 in cash. Captain Dwight York will receive an additional, $1,250,000 for his leadership.

Coach Leo Beenhacker will receive $1,000,000 and just like all the team players, is awarded the nation’s second highest award, the Chaconia Medal Gold.  Austin Jack Warner came in for high praise from the Prime Minister.  Mr. Manning acknowledged Mr. Warner’s contribution towards the warriors’ qualification, however there was no award nor monetary gain towards his name.

Prior to the formal ceremony, this began at 4: pm, the team members were paraded through the streets of Woodbrook, Port of Spain in a carnival like atmosphere where supporters chipped, danced, pranced and jumped to music whilst chanting the infectious "ole" all the way to the Stadium where a massive cultural extravaganza was already in progress.  Anyone ignorant to what was happening would have surely thought that a carnival mas band was preparing to cross the savannah stage. Once in the stadium, the crowd screamed and roared at any mention  of the "warriors" names.  Most popular were; Carlos Edwards, Brent Sancho, Christopher Birchell (who was not present) Shaka Hislop, Dwight Yorke and Russel Latapy who was by a great distance, the most popular of all.  Any mention of his name almost "brought the house down".

At the ceremony, Prime Minister Manning was serenaded by the large audience with the warriors anthem, Maximus dan's "Fighter", as he made his way towards the podium to deliver his address where he announced his cabinet's decision as to how the team should be honored. He also stated that South Africa 2010 (World Cup) has now become a national objective.  Before Mr. Manning's address, Captain Yorke expressed thanks on behalf of the team for all the support given.

TRUE EXPRESSIONS OF JOY

OUR WARRIORS MADE US PROUD

WIN LOSE OR DRAW

While I believe that our players were less courageous than our previous two games, our boys did not put us to shame.  We looked matched for the game and since this is our first time at this level its a victory in itself..   But where we won, was with our presence as a people -- Calls I received each day from Germany noted the acceptance of our culture in a far off land.

I just need mention this before closing -- Russel Latapy proved that he is amongst the best midfield players in the world.  Even the commentators noted this fact, after criticizing him about smoking forty cigarettes a day, went on to state "just give the ball to Latapy and something is bound to happen".  His skillful playmaking and accurate passing may have been needed a bit earlier.

Not criticizing anyone but there may have been some un-"wise" decisions, especially the late arrival of our most  tactful playmaker

Nevertheless the experience was great.

Point Fortin Has Lost A True Son
June 11th 2006

We deliberately did not publish this yesterday (Saturday June 10th) when it occurred since all the celebration was taking place and we did not wan to become a "kill-joy"  ----- However, Ronald "Sluggo" John has passed on to meet the creator.  We understand, that sometime soon after heartily enjoying the TnT, Sweden game, he was suddenly called.

"Sluggo" was committed to our community. --- Before there was "pointalive" Sluggo along with others, actually kept Point Fortin Alive. He was one of those responsible for generating the pride which exists within residents of Point Fortin.  He was true to his community.

We hereby extend condolences to his wife Wendy, the rest of the family  and to his close buddy Hector.   Sluggo will be terribly missed.

It is a sweet but bitter day in Point Fortin.
News just in:
Sluggo will be laid to eternal rest on Friday 16th June at the Cap de Ville cemetery following a spiritual service @ the Festival Square, Mahaica, Point Fortin.

We will like you to extend your personal condolences

POINT FORTIN A CITY???

Our beloved Prime Minister in his feature speech at the Point Fortin Chamber Awards function has hinted that Point Fortin will soon acquire city status.

Given the current infrastructural state of the current Borough, i.e. no immigration office, no fully functional licensing office, no ministry of education, no Inland Revenue to deal with Tax or Vat issues, no public port of entry, no High Court and so many other non-existent entities ---

In your opinion, do you agree that Point Fortin is equipped to be called a City or that such statement and/or any subsequent action to make Point Fortin a city is simply mere tokenism?

FIERY PROTEST
Residents protest lack of commitment

March 7th 2006
Commuters traveling between Point Fortin and San Fernando were surprised to find out early this morning that the roadways were blocked once again by angry residents protesting the lack of commitment from the Minister of Works on promises delivered last month.
Our crew witnessed one fiery blockage at Gonzales Junction (See photos on left) in Guapo and we were told that other road blocks were happening in Vance River, Vessigny and La Brea. Our crew was unable to get past this first blockage.
Last month, residents, together with the "Point Sando" Taxi Drivers Assoc. were engaged in protest action over the deplorable road condition between Point Fortin and San Fernando.  The protest ended when the Minister of Works The Hon. Colm Imbert promised to visit the area to get a first hand look at the situation.   During his visit, the minister made certain promises to the residents which may now be the catalyst for the current wave of protest.
(Click here for video clip of meeting)
Some residents speaking under conditions of anonymity told Pointalive.com that promises is all what people in the deep south has lived with from past governments and now is the time to step up the game. One particular resident expressed the view that it is about time for Government officials to be held accountable for their promises.  He said that they must not be allowed to speak without real commitment.
Another resident lamented that after all the talk of a promised highway linking San Fernando to Point Fortin, the minister is now stating that the proposed path will have to firstly go through Debe, Penal and other towns  before eventually ending in Point Fortin.  This, the resident said is unacceptable. Point Fortin makes a significant contribution to the national treasury and must be treated in like manner.  The question was asked "Why must we always be treated as third or fourth class citizens?

As usual, this website will keep you informed with ongoing happenings.

COLOURFUL CARNIVAL
Royalty brightens up Point Fortin

Carnival in Point Fortin climaxed on Tuesday Night with the appearance of the band Royalty which was produced by local mas man Neil Stanley.  At about 7:00pm, Royalty, the last band on stage at the Victor Chin Kit Park, impressed the long waiting crowd which had gathered from early as 3:00pm.

With colourful arrays of feathers, beads and sequins, matching the quality of anything seen on the big savannah stage, the band made up of mostly ladies crossed the stage with choreographed presentations of their four sections; Regalia, Crown Jewels, Royal Highness & Jewel of The Nile.

Leading the masquerade was recently crowned 2006 Queen of the Band, Camille St Louis. The band also included notable personalities like Kerry Ann Brown, Susan Sammy & Kandace Phillip.

Stanley, who produced last year's Carnival Band of The Year and the winning Borough Day J'Ouvert Band, is very confident about his presentation this year.  Stanley is also the band's designer.

Some of the other bands taking part in this year's celebration were Sisco & Assoc. - Treasures of Life, Legends & Friends - Destination Germany, John Paul & Assoc. - Lake Splash, Dr. Vincent Lasse & Assoc. - Broken Arrow, Ivan King & Assoc. - Mas Sancouche and Vessyl Production (Vessigny School)- Mariàge Macabre.

POINT J'OUVERT  KICKS OFF

Carnival celebrations in Point Fortin kicked off to a fairly good start with J'Ouvert masquerade beginning at around 5:00am.  The first band to approach the main drag was the Green Posse Engine Room from New Village.  The majority of revelers chose to display either painted faces or mud for costumes as they jumped to music provided by Rhythm Sections, Steelbands or DJs.

Our crew did not sight any traditional or ole mas and at the time of our departure which was at about 9:00am there was no sign of any oily Jab Jab

Some people present expressed a degree of satisfaction with the turnout, however many voiced the desire to see the return of traditional ole mas alongside the current trend.

Pointalive.com will continue to keep our "extended residents" abreast with what is happening back home.

Guapo residents form a human barricade

RIOT SQUAD CALLED IN

The situation in Point Fortin and environs took a turn for the worse today when a Police Riot Squad was brought in to dismantle ongoing protest action in communities around Point Fortin.

Today being the second day of protest action brought about by the Point/ Sando taxi drivers, villagers in Gonzales, Vance River, Sobo, La Brea and other surrounding districts stepped up the "heat' burning debris and forming human barricade which virtually brought traffic to a standstill for hours.

The police resorted to firing gun shots in the air and spraying tear-gas in an attempt to disperse the large crowds, which had gathered to support the taxi drivers cause and in the process letting out their discontent with the current central and local government. A pregnant woman who fainted after inhaling tear-gas, had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance. She is said to be resting comfortably.

Villagers lamented the apparent lack of concern for the deep south by Government in power. They said this area is responsible for the country's wealth and hardly anything is being done to uplift or develop communities within.  Some residents ask that they simply be treated with respect.
The current roadblocks spanned from Rousillac to Cap de Ville.  Some reports indicate that even as far as Chatham was affected.

One resident told Pointalive.com that until the PNM loses its stronghold in the area, the same treatment will continue.  The resident stated that at every election season, promise is made about an alternative roadway (Highway) linking Point Fortin and San Fernando, but this project never gets started.  It was also stated that no time frame was ever given to begin the project.

CHAOS IN POINT

Taxi drivers plying the Point Fortin / San Fernando route staged a protest which left commuters stranded this morning (Jan. 26th). The drivers are asking that the roads on which they earn their living be repaired.  They stated that a significant portion of their earnings are being used to conduct repair work to their vehicles.
A slow moving motorcade initiated by the drivers which began in Point Fortin destined for San Fernando was stopped by the police just after La Brea.
Residents in communities along the route showed their support for the Taxi Drivers by blocking the main roadway within their villages.....

LIAN PETERS IS COUNTRY'S 3RD BEST
CONGRATULATIONS

The New Year brought with it unexpected joy to some families within Point Fortin and environs.  When the new school term opened, parents Larry & Leslie Ann Peters from Harriman Park Point Fortin, were over excited when they learnt that their daughter Lian, a student of the Vessigny Government Secondary School scored the third highest mark island-wide for the Electronic Document Preparation & Management (EDPM), CXC examination.  The EDPM module was introduced last year within the CXC syllabus.

Apart from earning the third highest mark in the country for EDPM, Lian also earned distinctions in four other subject areas including mathematics, bringing her distinctions tally to five  Her dad Larry told Pointalive.com that he expected Lian to do well but not quite well as she did.

The EDPM facilitator at the school Ann-Margaret Jacob said that Lian was a consistent student who always had the drive to succeed.

Pointalive.com congratulates Lian on her outstanding success and wishes her the best she can achieve.

Pointalive.com understands that there are other students from the Point Fortin area who have done exceptionally well for the exams and we will attempt to showcase their achievements very soon.
